150 Years Since Ernst Abbe's Resolution Limit

150 years ago, Ernst Abbe revolutionized microscopy with his pioneering work, "Contributions to the Theory of the Microscope and of Microscopic Perception". He verified the results of his theoretical work experimentally using the workshops of Carl Zeiss. Abbe was able to formulate image formation in microscopes in general and thereby develop new forms of optical instruments to measure the performance of microscopes. Together with his industrial partner, he made a theretofore unthinkable reproducibility possible. Abbe used his famous formula concerning the physical limit of resolution capablity to bring bright-field microscopy using commercial products to its limits. This lecture illuminates Abbe's central findings in microscopy as well as the secondary instruments derived from them. We show the degree to which Abbe continues to influence the development of modern (fluorescent) microscopy with representative examples.
