Kick-off meeting 2019

From March 4 to 8, 2019 the youngest cohort of the GRK travelled to Canada to visit the institutes of our Canadian partners and to introduce themselves to the local research groups. The group of nine doctoral researchers was accompanied by the PIs Jens Limpert, Stefan Nolte, the prospective PI Giancarlo Soavi as well as the coordinator Anna Späthe.

The group first visited the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) in Varennes near Montreal, followed by the Département de physique, de génie physique et d'optique (COPL) at Université Laval in Quebec City and the University of Toronto in Toronto. The doctoral students presented their projects in short 5 minute pitches followed by presentations from Stefan Nolte, Jens Limpert and Giancarlo Soavi, who introduced his field of research to the new partners. The group was guided through the labs to learn about the research environment and the available methods and equipment. The young researchers from Germany and Canada connected quickly during breaks and especially during social dinners at all locations and established first links for further visits. Several doctoral researchers also used the opportunity to hold meetings of the Thesis Advisory Committee to discuss their projects and the upcoming collaboration.
Due to the extreme temperatures the trip was a real adventure to all group members and the doctoral students gained a valuable impression on the potential weather conditions of a research stay during Canadian winter. After the trip the young researchers returned with many helpful impressions, new ideas and future plans and as a grown group.
