A note on ASP's reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic

Dear students and applicants to our doctoral/PhD program,

the academic world is facing enourmos challenges and uncertainties since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.  However, Germany is dealing with it in a very responsible and successful manner. Germany has one of the most modern and efficient health systems in the world which has led one of the lowest infection and death rates of all large-area western democracies. The city of Jena, where the ASP campus program is hosted, was the first of all German cities to achieve a local stop of the local spreading of the Covid-19 virus. Already by the beginning of May 2020, research and education at the University are continued. Thus, we are regularly proceeding with the application and enrollment procedures as usual, and hope to welcome the best and most enthusiastic Photonics students and young researchers.

We have already adapted our education program to BLENDED learning, i.e. both on-campus and online. Currently, all lectures, seminars and even internships are offered online. Students can follow them and gather all necessary credits, regardless of where they are currently located. We are also currently testing and adapting further innovative digital teaching, like Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) modules in optical laboratories and internships.

The Abbe School of Photonics in Jena is one of the best places in the world to study research-oriented, hands-on optics and photonics in high-end, research-grade laboratories. This is our main mission and one of our main strengths. Thus, we want to give students access to our labs as soon as this is permitted. Accordingly, on-campus teaching is our preferred solution on the long run. However, if this is not possible by October 2020, we will start equivalently online and switch to on-campus later.

We are also prepared and will offer flexible solutions for visa issues. Since many Visa offices are closed, we anticipate backlogs and delays in visa applications, and some of the travel restrictions might also affect Visa processes. Our experienced administrative team will support all students to get their visa in a timely manner.

Please do not hesitate to take a closer look at our program and apply – we will carefully check every single application.

Wishing you and your familiy the very best of health!
