The Abbe Center of Photonics (ACP) and the Abbe School of Photonics (ASP) permanently offer excellent opportunities to achieve academic careers at every degree (Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral degrees). At times, open positions for doctoral studies will be advertized here. ASP offers strong support to acquire postgraduate funding. In addition, a number of open research and teaching positions will be filled following the selection of appropriate candidates.

W3-Professorship in Optical System Design and Simulation (published July 2020)

The faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena invites applications for the position of a Professor (W3 or W2 with Tenure Track to W3) in Optical System Design and Simulation to be filled in 2021.

The successful candidate (m/f/d) should have a scientific focus on design and simulation of optical systems, covering conceptual layout, design, optimization, physical simulation as well as tolerancing. This includes excellent research work on modern components, aberration theory, digital imaging and metrology of systems, imaging and illumination applications and physical simulation of the various effects in real optical systems. One of the most important goals in this research area is the development and investigation of novel methods and algorithms in optical design in the field of optical instrumentation. Thereby, a holistic approach and conceptual system thinking considering classical and modern approaches as well as technological aspects of realization are expected. A strong application related approach in close cooperation with the other research groups of the University and thematically related institutes and companies within an existing and growing network is expected. Active contributions to the university's profile line Light are desired. Involvement in academic self-administration is expected. Teaching should cover especially the design of optical systems within the curricula in physics and in particular photonics.

Several doctoral researcher (PhD) positions at the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1375 "NOA - Nonlinear Optics on Atomic scales" (updated June 2020)

The DFG-funded CRC 1375 NOA focuses on exploring fundamental nonlinear processes of light-matter interaction in low-dimensional nanostructures, such as atomically thin layers, nanoparticles and -wires, nanostructured surfaces and molecular assemblies. The Research Center team further is exploring quantum phenomena as light-induced tunneling of electrons through metallic nanogaps and field-driven carrier acceleration in plasmonic nanostructures, atomic lattices and 2D-materials and construct new subwavelength-scale materials with tailored high nonlinearity for optical switching and frequency conversion by stacking atomically thin amorphous or crystalline films and employing deep subwavelength field enhancement utilizing nanostructures.

We are looking for excellent Diploma or M.Sc. graduates with a strong background in physics and photonics being interested in at least one of the following topics:

  • electromagnetic modeling
  • density functional theory and modeling of light-driven quantum systems
  • experiments in nonlinear light-matter interaction
  • generation, characterization and investigation of optical nanostructures and 2D-materials

Three open opsitions for scientific employees (PhDs or postdocs) in the Fiber Laser Group (updated January 2020)

The positions  will be in the group of Prof. Jens Limpert at the Insitute of Applied Physics, and centered on the following trhee topis:

  • Broadband and ultrafast nanoscale imaging in the XUV
  • Coherent high photon flux soft X-ray sources
  • Ultra-fast XUV spectroscopy in molecules, ions and solids"
