Language Models and AI Tools in Science' by Dr. Christian Leiterer, Nucleus
This seminar offers an introduction to the application of language models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence in the writing process. Participants will learn how LLMs work, from basic transformer models to the practical application of current models such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
Seminar focus:
Basics and functionality: An introduction to the technology behind LLMs, including concepts such as Word2Vec.
Use cases in a scientific context include, for example:
1. Improving texts in terms of spelling, grammar and expression with the help of tools such as DeepL Write.
2. Writing research proposals with custom LLMs tailored to specific funding guidelines such as Horizon Europe.
3. Creating project reports and drafting documents such as letters of intent (LOI).
- Practical session: The seminar includes an interactive part in which participants learn how to create reports, research proposals and other academic texts with AI support.
- AI-assisted research and data analysis: Introduction to tools such as perplexity.aiExternal link and elicit.comExternal link for literature research and document analysis.
- Critical reflection: A discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of LLMs, such as the potential for misinformation, as well as the impact on cognitive processes.
- Target audience: The seminar is aimed at researchers who wish to optimise their writing and research processes using AI technologies.
